• Providing a highly active and stable PdPt catalysts with unique porous structure. Designing correlative methodology including ADT, IL-imaging, in situ XAFS, MP-AES DFT calculations. Tracing dynamic structural evolution of alloy during electrochemical degradation both theory experiment. Establishing an accurate structure-performance relationship under ORR reaction conditions. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells require oxygen reduction high activity stability. Pt based materials are most widely applied catalyst due to its intrinsic activity, but usually suffer from rapid deactivation as result particle agglomeration, detachment, Ostwald ripening and/or dissolution. Here we investigate the alloys via X-ray absorption fine structure, ? ? analysis, identical location-electron microscopy We conclude that origin stability stems oxidation resistance metallic Pt, forming mainly surface adsorbed O species at potentials. Two stage process observed, showing dependent performance along process. The careful design structure leads controlled behaviours. This opens new way increase lifespan improve utilization efficiency.
